Tim Mortlock
Chief Executive Officer

A Chartered Director, Tim has over 20 years’ experience in the energy and utility industry across utility connections, smart metering, data and energy services. Tim was previously part of the UPL business (acquired by SMS in 2014) almost from its inception and, prior to taking up his role as Chief Executive Officer (from 2022), he served as Managing Director of SMS’s asset management, data and energy management businesses.
Tim has expert knowledge of electricity and gas smart metering, having been responsible for setting up UPL’s electricity metering business following deregulation in 2004.
Gail Blain
Chief Financial Officer

Gail has strong corporate finance and accounting experience acquired over a number of years in senior financial roles. Since joining SMS in 2016, Gail has worked to standardise and streamline processes ensuring alignment with the strategic direction of the business.
Prior to joining the Company, Gail spent six years at Aggreko plc and three years with BAA Limited Group. Gail is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland, qualifying with Baker Tilly LLP in 2007.
John Hall
Managing Director (Asset Installation)

Having joined SMS in July 2016 to head up the Group’s asset installation division, John brings over 20 years of senior management experience to the company, including a previous role as MD of one of the UK’s largest independent metering installation businesses. He believes in strong leadership and enabling a culture that inspires and motivates his team to ensure successful service delivery. John has a proven track record of delivering meter assets at scale, and his knowledge and experience in this field make him perfectly positioned to lead SMS’s asset installation business.
Eugenio Herrero
Managing Director of EV Charging Infrastructure

Eugenio leads the growth of the Group’s EV charging infrastructure business, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the EV charging infrastructure industry. Previously he held the position of Executive Director of ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging network, PoGo Charge, and of SWARCO Smart Charging’s investment division, where he led the incubation, development and growth of the business.
Prior to his role at PoGo, he managed the launch of the Be.EV network in Manchester, UK. Eugenio has also held several commercial and development positions for infrastructure and energy projects at Amey Investments, Ferrovial Agroman and Abengoa Engineering and Construction, both in the UK and overseas.
Mark Evans
Chief Information Officer

Mark has over 25 years’ experience across technology architecture, IT operations, software engineering, change management and enterprise transformation, including large scale digital transformation. His experience has been gained across a number of sectors, including financial services, manufacturing, sales and distribution, as well as in the public sector. Prior to joining SMS in February 2022, Mark spent five years as CTO defining and then delivering the digital strategy at Hodge Bank, before which he was Chief Architect and Head of Technology at the DVLA.
Judy Keir
Chief People Officer

Having initially served as Group HR Director since joining the business in 2019, in April 2022 Judy moved into the newly created role of Chief People Officer. Her remit includes leading the people strategy and driving the culture, whilst ensuring that employee engagement, development, health and wellbeing, and equality, diversity and inclusion are paramount. In addition, leading the ESG agenda, and the Marketing department. Judy’s HR experience of more than 20 years includes being FCIPD qualified and a trained workplace mediator, and spans across the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors including the manufacturing, construction and financial services industries within the UK, Ireland and internationally.
External appointments
Judy currently holds a long-term Non-Executive Director (Trustee) position with a charitable group.
Craig McGinn

Craig is a qualified corporate and banking lawyer with over 20 years of experience and has responsibility for the management of all legal matters affecting the Group, for ethical risk matters and for supporting the Board in setting and maintaining the highest standards of corporate governance. He is a Qualified Solicitor in Scotland, England and Wales and a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
Craig joined SMS in October 2016 having previously been a partner in the international legal firm CMS Cameron McKenna, and at Dundas & Wilson prior to its merger with CMS.
John Flaherty
Managing Director (Grid-scale Energy Storage)

A qualified chartered accountant, John spent more than a decade in financial services working for major global institutions in the UK and Europe before moving into the energy sector. Within the energy industry his experience spans senior roles within conglomerates and start-ups across finance, customer service, and commercial, through which he has made notable contributions to energy innovation over the past ten years. Since joining SMS as Director of Business Development in 2018, he now heads up the Group’s Grid-scale Energy Storage division.
Iain Hyslop

In a career spanning 40 years, Iain has worked in numerous sectors both in the UK and overseas in the field of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (SHEQ). Iain is a chartered member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, a member of the International Institute for Risk & Safety Management, and is also a member of the Institute of Directors. He has a master’s degree in Safety and Risk Management, and for nine years he tutored on the subject at the University of Strathclyde. Iain is also a published author.
Dilip Kejriwal
Head of Investor Relations

Dilip joined SMS 2018 as Head of Investor Relations and is also involved in Group strategy. With an MBA in Finance, Dilip has 12 years’ experience in the utilities, infrastructure and renewable energy space at leading investment banks including Citi, UBS, Macquarie and AMP-Capital. His career spans experience working as a sell-side analyst, primary and secondary investments across the infrastructure sector, and mergers and acquisitions.

With qualifications as a barrister and in corporate finance, Miriam has spent more than 30 years working for a number of leading investment banks and other financial institutions and has been a non-executive director of several publicly listed and private companies. Miriam has extensive experience in the energy and utilities industry.
She was, for nine years until 2013, a non-executive director of the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (Ofgem) and, for seven years until recently, chair of the Expert Panel for the Gas Network Innovation Competition.
External appointments
During 2021, Miriam was appointed as a non-executive director of Aquila Energy Efficiency Trust. In addition, she holds non-executive director positions at Gulf International Bank (UK) Limited, the UK subsidiary of Gulf International Bank, at Eclipse Shipping Limited and at River and Mercantile Group plc, where she also chairs the remuneration committee. Beyond board roles, Miriam is an adviser to Ofgem on the current RIIO-2 price control and to the Mayor of London’s Energy Efficiency Fund. A Deputy Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh, Miriam was awarded an OBE for services to corporate finance.

Graeme is an experienced corporate financier and qualified Chartered Accountant, having previously been a partner with Arthur Andersen LLP and finance director of international groups. He has formerly served on the boards of a number of other companies, including Macfarlane Group plc, Interbulk plc, Belhaven Group plc, Scottish Futures Trust Limited and Anderson Strathern LLP, and was formerly a member of Court at the University of Glasgow.
External appointments
Graeme is a non-executive director of Cruden Group Limited, Calnex Solutions plc, and Aberforth Split Level Income Trust plc and also undertakes a number of pro bono appointments, including as trustee of Citizens Advice Scotland and trustee of the Entrepreneurial Scotland Foundation.

Following a varied early career in different sectors, Ruth has specialised in business transformation through the use of technology.
Ruth most recently served as chief information officer for the Letters and Network division of Royal Mail, an organisation where she spent ten years.
Ruth also served as chair of Royal Mail’s Disability Steering Group, encouraging open communication and respect for diversity at all levels as well as seeking technology-based solutions for challenges in the workplace. Prior to Royal Mail, Ruth started her career in operational roles with Procter & Gamble, and then worked in consultancy for Coopers & Lybrand. Following a period at Debenhams she was part of the start-up team behind the British online supermarket Ocado, before honing her commercial and delivery skills further with consultancy Kurt Salmon Associates.
External appointments
During 2021, Ruth was appointed as a non-executive director and chair of the Quality Committee at the Financial Ombudsman Service. Ruth is also an active member of the ‘Women in Technology’ mentoring programme operated by Reed.

Jamie is a Chartered Accountant and has 25 years’ experience in fund management, banking and corporate recovery with a focus on the infrastructure and renewable energy sectors.
He was a partner, executive committee member and head of infrastructure at Foresight Group for 18 years. Previously, he worked at PwC, Citibank and Macquarie, in both London and Sydney.
External appointments
Jamie’s other current roles are as a non-executive director and audit committee chair for the investment trust US Solar Fund plc and as alternate chairman of the investment committee of Community Owned Renewable Energy, an investment programme targeting UK solar farms for community ownership.
Mike Winkel

Mike is a former COO of E.ON SE and CEO of its Renewables business, and has extensive experience in the global power and gas sector. Mike has held various senior commercial, strategic and managerial roles in renewable power generation, optimisation, and asset operation and has more than 25 years of experience in the industry. In addition, Mike holds a degree in Business Administration from the Technical University of Dresden and holds a number of board and senior advisory positions with international organisations.
