26.4 million smart and advanced meters now installed across the UK
The UK’s large energy suppliers installed just over 900,000 smart and advanced meters in homes and small business during the third quarter (Q3) of 2021, according to latest Government statistics on the smart meter rollout.
There were 26.4 million smart and advanced meters in Great Britain at the end of Q3. Of these, 21.6 million were smart meters operating in smart mode and advanced meters – representing 39% of all meters – with a further 9% of meters being smart meters in traditional mode. Therefore, as at 30 September 2021, a total of 47% of all gas and electric in meters were smart or advanced (a 2% increase from Q2 2021).
Smart DCC network continues to grow
In late November, Smart DCC announced the 10 millionth home was connected to its network. In addition to the 10 million households, a total of 16.3 million smart meters are using the system of which some 6.4 million are first-generation and 9.9 million are second-generation smart meters. The smart meters connected to the network are helping the UK to reduce 472,185 tonnes of carbon emissions per annum, DCC estimates.
Angus Flett, Smart DCC CEO, said:
This landmark means the number of properties connected to the DCC network has doubled in less than a year, and this shows continuing momentum behind the energy smart meter roll-out. This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of our customers – energy suppliers and distribution network operators – together we are making Britain more connected so we can all lead smarter, greener lives.”
