Smart meter roll out ramps up, latest figures show
There was a three percent rise in domestic smart meter installations in the second quarter of 2017 compared to the first, bringing the total number of smart and advanced meters operating in homes and business across the country to 7.68 million.
The UK government’s domestic smart meter roll out has experienced a quarterly increase according to data released by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
A total of 1,058,1002 domestic smart meters were installed by large energy suppliers in the second quarter of 2017 (460,100 gas and 598,100 electricity meters), representing a three per cent rise in domestic smart meter installations compared to the first three months of the year.
As per BEIS’ quarterly report, this brings the total number of installed smart meters in domestic properties across the country to 7.36 million, accounting for approximately 15 percent of the roll out’s overall target, while there are now more than 7.68 million smart and advanced meters being operated in homes and businesses around Great Britain overall.
The Smart Metering Programme aims to install over 50 million smart gas and electricity meters in all domestic properties (as well as smart or advanced meters in smaller non-domestic sites) by the end of 2020, impacting roughly 30 million premises.
BEIS’ latest figures follow the release of Smart Energy GB’s latest Smart Energy Outlook report in August, which highlighted a general rise in positive perception of smart meters, including the finding that 76 per cent of smart meter owners would recommend the technology.
