SMS supports Black History Month 2021
During October we will be supporting Black History Month in order to promote knowledge and understanding of Black History and culture amongst our employees and followers. Find out more about this great initiative below.
What is Black History Month?
Black History Month is a national celebration that runs every October and aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, as well as to foster a better understanding of Black history in general.
Black History Month was launched in the UK in the 1980s in London and was largely the result of local community activism in response to racism in British society and the often unbalanced version of history relayed through the UK’s state school system.
Today Black History Month has become an important date in the UK cultural calendar and is an initiative that SMS is proud to support in order to promote knowledge and understanding of Black History and culture.
How can I participate in Black History Month?
More than 6,000 events – many of them free – are taking place locally and nationally to celebrate Black History Month, including community initiatives, museum exhibitions, arts and culture workshops, cinema showings and much more.
You can find a full set of listings to find out what’s happening near you by visiting the Black History Month Events calendar.
How SMS is supporting Black History Month
After engaging with SMS employees to gather ideas on how we could appropriately mark the event, we will be running a social media campaign throughout October to spread awareness and understanding of Black history, directing our employees to educational resources where they can find out more about the significant contributions made by Black people to the cultural and economic development of the UK.
SMS is a member of the Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion (ENEI) and as an organisation we are dedicated to ensuring a diverse, inclusive work environment that promotes wellbeing and supports all communities and wider society.
SMS supports Prostate Cancer UK
One of the charities that SMS currently and actively supports through our fundraising and donation activities Prostate Cancer UK. It is a recognised fact that Black males are unfortunately more likely to get Prostate Cancer than other men. According to Prostate Cancer UK, it is estimated that about 1 in 4 black men in Britain will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. To find out more about prostate cancer, its signs, symptoms and risks, visit the charity’s website.
